This short workshop will focus on connecting with your audience by turning your darker emotions into comedy.
The focus of this workshop is to help students address darker issues on stage. This can include anything from physical or mental health problems to injustice, from trauma to death. We’ll discuss how to transition to difficult topics without losing the audience, how to keep the audience engaged by building and releasing tension, and how to keep everyone on your side (or get them back on your side), no matter where your jokes may take them.
Please note: While there will be limits placed on students attempting to be edgy for the sake of being edgy, someone else might be using comedy to address a difficult issue that might be triggering to them so those who might not want to deal with that shouldn’t sign up.
Cassandra Dee (she/her) is a stand-up comedian and writer from Philadelphia. She’s been a regular at Good Good Comedy Theatre, Punch Line Philly, and Helium Comedy Club, where she won the title of Philly’s Phunniest Person in 2018. She’s opened for headliners like Janeane Garofalo, Mark Normand, Beth Stelling, Chris Gethard, and Aparna Nancherla. Recently, she was featured on the Best of Helium 2020: Volume One compilation album and her jokes can be heard on SiriusXM.
As an instructor, she aims to help students find their own voice so they can contribute a unique piece of themselves to the comedy world.
